R.G Baits "The FORMULA" Boilie & Popups review

Personally, I had never heard of RG Baits until around 2-3 months ago, when I was looking for a new bait company to try. It’s one of those that you won’t find in every tackle shop and in some way, its “underground”, which are the type of companies I really like. RG had started from the bottom making baits for themselves and their friends, then onto selling the odd kilo and now running a company selling bait all over the country and across the pond. The owners Ryan Heaton & Greg Myles have something very special here.

I couldn’t wait to get out and test this range of bait. I was looking forward to trying something different, rather than the typical companies such as the likes of Dynamite and Mainline, both of which produce some great bait, but I felt that these are widely used and wanted something a little different from what everyone else is using to hopefully give me that edge. I find it hard to stick to one bait and overall. I must have 10 kilos of bait from various companies. I must admit RG has given me an indication that maybe I should stick to one bait for a while, and if so it’s going to be with the RG bait range because of how good this bait is!

PALATABLE, DIGESTIBLE AND NUTRITIONAL

The PDN seal of approval is what the company has aimed for by producing high-quality bait that is fresh and full of a nutritional value and could quite possibly be good enough for human consumption (yes, I did eat one). The boilies and pop-ups I received called “THE FORMULA”, which consists of a mix of fish meals, milk proteins, natural kelp extract, Antarctic krill meal, blended bird seeds and powdered green lipped muscle extract, along with human grade food preserver to give the bait its shelf life properties. You won’t find any unhealthy artificial colouring or flavours in RG baits and they have a right to claim the PDA seal of approval.
On opening the bucket of goodness, your nose pallet is sent tingling. How any fish - especially carp - is going to resist this, I don’t know! The smell is fresh and strong but not overpowering like some baits. I think that can put off a bite or two but these were spot on. You can really smell the fishmeal in these fine crafted boilies and pop-ups. They especially passed the 'will my wife notice these in the living room' test - it took her less than 10 seconds! The outer side of the bottom bait is soft, which you know will help with leakage, but not too soft that small fish could nibble it down. Inside is soft and crumbles, leaving you a good crumb of goodness. This is perfect for when crushing to use in a PVA or mesh bag and a combination of the FORMULA boilie and the FORMULA pop-up really compliment each other. I’d say it’s something even Gordon Ramsay would approve of!

TESTING

The pop-ups from RG Baits stayed buoyant after four daysThe pop-ups from RG Baits stayed buoyant after four days
I performed a little home experiment as I couldn’t get on the bank for a few days. I submerged both baits to see how they would react over a long period of time. After four days, the pop-up was still buoyant. It had not sunk in the slightest and could easily float for longer, which is ideal if you don’t have the confidence in a pop-up which you feel could fall flat after 24hrs. The bottom bait also held up perfectly settled on the bottom with no signs of falling apart and best of all both baits kept their smell. This gave me more confidence that the smell wouldn’t wash out. RG baits have done a grand job on producing a boilie which can keep its shape and smell over a long period - pumping out that attraction is what we want in a bait.
I finally managed to get on the bank over the weekend and visited a venue I fished a week before called Brockamin Fishery in Leigh Sinton. I can happily say the bait managed to produce some carp, even if I did manage to lose a few! The bait on the other hand never failed to produce a bite. I can say with confidence that I have had more takes on this bait than any other brand that I have tried so far. I will be carrying on with this bait for a while and hopefully land a PB soon. Top company, top bait and affordable. Go and try it! Meanwhile, go and check out the RG Baits Facebook page and see for yourself the many chunks that are falling to this bait.
Cheers,
Ricky Davies
